Exposure to Tainted Food

Posted by gsc on September 18, 2007

The economic focus has driven mankind for advancement and improvement. In their enthusiasm to make quick returns from the investments, some are willing to compromise on the acceptable level of safety standards set by the authorities.

In the recent situation, China, the global exporter, after taking massive beatings abroad, released a 39-page policy, “China’s Food Safety Quality” in an attempt to save its reputation. Judging from their responses made domestically that stiff actions will be taken against those who used banned chemicals to boost yield and profit, these assurances given by their Agriculture Minister did not stop the warnings and recalls made abroad and it has shaken the confidence of “made in China” label in the international market. In July, China executed the former head of its state food and drug administration for dereliction of duty. With all eyes on those labels, the question is, will the monitoring bodies also maintain their focus on the products from other countries so that the consumers are well protected from this exposure.

Malachite Green:- This chemical is used as dye on leather, fabrics, and paper and when diluted it is effective against parasite, bacterial and fungal infections in fish. Research conducted on rodents found that it promotes the formation of liver tumor after two years was amongst the many negative findings that would be detrimental to human health when consumed. As such, fish that are treated with this toxic chemical is not destined for human consumption. In June 2007, US blocked the importation of several varieties of seafood that were contaminated with this chemical. Though US has banned the usage of this substance on food since 1983, and followed by Canadian Government advice against its usage in fish (for consumption) in 1992, certain countries still allow its usage in a controlled manner.

Melamine:- It is commonly used externally on products to give the glossy and durable effects. Today, many of the kitchen utensils and table-wares are made of melamine as they are hygienic and safe. While the product is user friendly, the damage that it may cause to human when consumed is yet to be documented. It was reported recently that animal feeds that were added with melamine to increase their apparent protein content were recalled when the animals died due to kidney failure after eating the products. This gives credence to the report that claim ingestion of this product may cause damage to the kidney, reproductive organs, and bladder which may lead to cancer. Now, would you eat the meat of the animal that is fed with melamine tainted feeds?

Diethylene glycol (DEG):- It is a sweet flavored anti-freeze agent found in hydraulic fluid, brake fluid and coolant. As it is three times cheaper than glycerin and sweeter, many unscrupulous traders used it as a substitute to glycerin in juniors’ cough syrup, toothpaste and paracetamol that have caused many deaths to children in the hands of the unsuspecting parents. Last year, 100 people in Panama have reportedly died after taking the medicines that officials unwittingly mixed DEG thinking it was glycerin as labeled by the exporter. In May 2007, Panamanian Officials reported that imported toothpaste contained high level of DEG and this was experienced by many users in US who complained of headache after using the toothpaste. Hence, the recalls for this toothpaste were made in US, Japan and followed by those who had imported them.

If you were wine drinker, would you be suspecting the DEG was added to give it a sweet and full-bodied taste? In 1885, a small group of short-sighted Austrian wine producers caused the country’s wine export to collapse until stricter regulations were imposed on their industry.

Domestic animals that licked on the spillage from vehicles have also died. DEG causes the kidney to fail, central nervous system to collapse and paralyzes the body functions making respiration difficult.

It is difficult for an individual to know the rate of exposures to this tainted food. As these hidden poisons could be exported from any country, it is hope that the authorities in the importing countries put stringent monitoring systems in place in protecting the health of their citizens

Coenzyme Q-10 and Cancer

Coenzyme Q-10 – Cancer Survivor Experience

We have visited many working colleagues that were recuperating in the hospital; little did we suspect that our very close friend being diagnosed with cancer. After an initial shock, we realized that we have to be strong in providing the support that she requires when dealing with cancer. Fortunately, her extended family members were there to support her in dealing with the many phrases of emotion of sadness, anger, anxiety, confused and fear. We started looking for more information in the internet, from cancer surviving friends and the hospitals that meet their expectations and affordability to treat her. During that time, we received many unsolicited advices and we must say that they were all well intended. While some advices created confusion, her family members made up their  mind to refer her to the main-stream medication in dealing with cancer. As the cancer cell was diagnosed to be fast growing, the surgery was immediately arranged after the confirmation was done by means of biopsies.

After the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, she needs help to overcome fatigue and other side effects of the treatments. To stay healthy during the recovery, she exercises (qigong & at the gym), eats well, rests well and takes daily dosage of 360mg coenzyme Q-10 (reported effective dosage for cancer survivor) to strengthen the immune-system. With this discipline, we noticed the boost in her energy and that she was enjoying life again like before. As we are convinced with the potency of coenzyme Q-10, we thought it is meaningful to share the experience with you.

 What is Coenzyme Q-10?

It is a vitamin like compound and a strong antioxidant also known as ubiquinol-l0. While a small amount of this compound is found in food, our body also produces it naturally and it is mostly found in our organs, the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas and with lowest in the lungs. As we grow older, the level of coenzyme Q-10 decreases and exposes us to the Free Radicals that cause damage to our body cells.

What made us to decide on Coenzyme Q-10?

After reading few health books, especially, “Miracle Cures” written by Jean Carpers and “Dismantling Cancer” by Francisco Contreras (MD), Jorge Barroso – Aranda (MD,PHD) and Daniel E. Kennedy, I embarked on my search for more information on the potency of  this powerful antioxidant and how it stimulates the immune system and increases resistance against diseases. In my search, I found that recent studies by researches at University of Miami, Florida reported coenzyme Q-10 alters bcl-2 in a manner that allows the cancer cell to kill itself without hurting the normal cells. (BCL-2 is a human proto-oncogene located on chromosome 18 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bcl-2). While I may have read many articles on the positive effects of coenzyme Q-10 and how it is used to complement the main-stream medications, it is important to note that my writing is not a medical advice and that you are advised to consult your own doctors or other qualified health professionals.

Echinacea and Aircrew

Posted by gsc on August 25, 2007

Echinacea – Aircrew experience of its effectiveness on Common Cold,

Being a crewmember, one is exposed to many climatic and time changes of the destinations that one flies to and sometimes these exposures vary from one extreme to the other. While on the job in the aircraft challenging cabin microenvironment with the reduction of atmospheric pressure, the crew also experience noise, vibration, and degradation of air quality. Having to rotate the working hours from day to night that affects the circadian rhythm/internal biological clock of the brain, one would have to take time in adjusting the new sleep/wake cycle. With these compounded negative environment, the body immune-systems will natural take some beatings. This makes the crew susceptible to suffer Common Cold.

In my early days as a cabin crew, my combat to this common cold or flu was to take vitamin C and garlic parsley pills or visit the nearby clinic. Each visit made me feel lousier as I felt drowsy and weak with all those medications. One day, a friend introduced me Echinacea and since then that Common Cold is not common anymore. I started recommending this magic bullet (capsule) to my other colleagues and all have been convinced of its potency in strengthening the immune-systems against common cold. While we stay healthy with this supplement, Germany’s Commission E reported that it should not be taken for more than eight weeks at a time. I have followed this recommendation and have kept colds and flu at bay.

Echinacea (pronounced eck-uh-nay-sha  OR  ek-in-AY-see-a) plant grows wild throughout United States. While there are nine species, only three have been well studied for the use of medicinal purposes. During the early days before the development of antibiotics, Echinacea was used as mouthwash for toothaches and drank as tea to combat common cold, coughs and sore throats. Their use and further study was stunted when anti-biotic that gives immediate effects was introduced. With the formation of Germany’s Commission E that gives recognition to this herbal potency, trained herbal health professionals are recommending Echinacea to their patients. However, Echinacea is not prescribed to those who are allergic to chrysanthemums, daisies, marigolds and sunflowers. Today, Echinacea is commonly used in Europe, USA and Asia.

Qigong at Subang Jaya

Posted by gsc on August 23, 2007

Updated – 13 September 2009          GUOLIN QIGONG AT SUBANG JAYA, MALAYSIA

Sunday morning at USJ 4/8 Garden -    Subang, Bukit Jalil & Puchong Stations
(Click Maps below)

Guolin New Qigong adopts 3 principles in healing cancer:-
1.    Increasing Oxygenation
2.    Improving Circulation
3.    Stabilizing Emotions

Traditional Chinese medicine holds that disease occurs when there is stagnation of qi which will be cured when the circulation of qi and blood is improved. Hence, with proper execution of Relaxation (sung jing), Concentration (yi lian) and Breathing (hu xi) in qigong exercises, one will be able to achieve the 3 fundamental principles mentioned above advocated by Guolin in activating the flow of qi (vital life energy). One will be able to sleep well, eat well, and strengthen the immune system to heal even the most chronic diseases http://www.orientalhealing.net/archive/03282000-2.html.

It is also acknowledged in the western medicine that cancer cells can be suppressed when oxygen level is increased to eight times more than the normal in-take. The Guolin double inhalations (xi xi) in the Walking Qigong exercise increases the oxygen in-take 20 times more than the normal that causes the retardation of cancer cells growth

There are 5 basic therapies a cancer patient can adhere to in order to fight cancer:-
1.  Western Therapy:  Surgery, Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy
2.  Chinese Therapy:  Acupuncture or Chinese Medicine
3.  Change Lifestyles
4.  Diet
5.  Guolin Qigong

Note:- Madam Guo Lin introduced 3-prongs approach, however with the Stress of modern living and environment, we have included no. 3 & 4

Ms. Guo Lin (1906-1984) born near Zhongshan, Guangdong was afflicted with uterine cancer in 1949 at the age of 43 and had it removed by surgery in Shanghai. The cancer recurred in 1959 and this time it had metastasized to the bladder that made her to undergo for another operation (to remove part of the bladder that was cancerous) in Beijing. Five years later in 1964, the cancer relapsed and after four more operations, the doctor (Western medicine) gave her six months to live. However, she did not give up hope and in her struggle against cancer she remembered that her late grandfather, a Taoist priest had taught her as a child to practice qigong. Together with the qigong texts willed to her by her late grandfather, she began to research and practice qigong, hoping to recover. She created her own exercise schedule, practiced diligently for two hours daily and six months later she found that her cancer was in remission. She was so strongly convinced of her qigong’s ability to cure illness that she bravely started giving out lessons in 1970 in what she called “New qigong Therapy”.  During this period, China was under Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and within 1971-1976; Ms. Guo Lin was interrogated seven times, expelled from Dongdan Park and her two assistant trainers were arrested and imprisoned for twenty days.

By 1977, after the Cultural Revolution, Master Guo Lin had achieved impressive result and pro-claimed publicly that Qigong Can Cure Cancer. With her nine trained assistants to help her, she was able over the next two years travelled all over China to twenty provincial capitals to teach and lecture at the request of many local health care centres and medical departments until her passing on 14 December 1984,  twenty years after the “death judgement” by her doctor.

In the nut-shell, Guolin New Qigong therapy is not based on the external energy (wei qi) of others (qigong masters), but upon the inner energy (nei qi) of the qigong partaker himself. Guolin qigong combines active and passive exercises in three stages: Relaxation (sung jing), Concentration (yi lian) and Breathing (hu xi)

Today, this Guolin New Qigong has spread to all over China, America, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and Malaysia etc.

To allow readers a better perspective, attached herewith is the excerpt from a former  President Dr Amir Farid Dato Isahak.

Quote:-

The most important exercise in Guolin Qigong is the walking exercises whereby the breathing, footstep and body and arm movements are consciously coordinated to energize the body. It is this exercise that has benefited chronic disease patients most. This qigong-walk doubles or even triples one’s walking distance in terms of endurance and stamina compared with ordinary walking.

Those who are ill or receiving hazardous cancer treatments will find their ability to cope with the illness or the side-effects of the treatment much better. Those who are unable to walk can do stationary exercises first. But it is always better to have a preventive attitude than to wait for illness to strike before learning qigong.

Dr Amir Farid bin Dato Isahak

President (Former),

Guolin Qigong Association Malaysia.
